Phil Mickleson - 2008 PGA Championship Player
Phil Mickelson ranks second among active players on the Official World Golf Rankings since making his professional debut at the 1992 U.S. Open. He is tied for 13th all-time with Horton Smith and is currently number two on the PGA Tour career money list. He has finished second or third on the money list seven times, including six of the last eight seasons.
Mickelson finished in the top 10 at eight of the last nine Masters Tournaments which include his wins in 2004 and 2006. As at the 2004 Masters, his 2005 PGA Championship win came with a birdie on the final hole. A member of the last six Ryder Cup teams, he is the only U.S. Player to appear in all seven Presidents Cups.
Mickelson has been a consistently great player in the U.S. Open over the last five years. He had two seconds and a third, averaged 71,25 and earned $1,813, 207. He has also set the standard in the Masters over the last five years with two wins, two thirds and averaged 70.40 per round and won $3,407,800.
Mickelson holds one PGA Tour tournament record, 2006 Bellsouth Classic, 28 under par 260. He shares three PGA Tour current course records: 2001 Travelers Championship, TPC Cromwell, 61; 2005 FBR Open, TPC Scottsdale, 60; 2006 BellSouth Classic, TPC Sugarloaf, 63; and holds one outright: 2005 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, Spyglass Hill, 62.
His career best score on Tour, 60, came in the second round of the 2005 FBR Open at the TPC Scottsdale and included a penalty stroke on the 11th hole, his second hole of the day. His first victory as a PGA Tour member came in the 1993 Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines in his native San Diego. His 75 remains the highest opening score by a winner, but the average score on the cold, wet and windy South Course that day was 79.
