Geoff Ogilvy - 2008 PGA Championship Player Profile
Geoff
Ogilvy is an Australian golfer currently ranked 13th in the official
world golf rankings, and the 2006 US Open winner. This achievement makes
Ogilvy the first Australian to win a men’s golf major since Steve Elkington
at the 1995 PGA Championship.
Geoff Ogilvy’s victory at the US Open placed positioned him in the top ten for the first time. The 2008 PGA Championship player then went on to reach his highest placing of seven the same year, and returned to that rank at the beginning of 2007 after finishing as runner-up at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.
Goeff Ogilvy has had three professional wins since turning professional in 1998, all on the PGA Tour: the US Open, the 2005 Chrysler Classic of Tucson and the 2006 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. This victories indicate that the Australian golfer is a strong contender for the upcoming season, which start with the US Masters in April.
Geoff Ogilvy’s second best score to date has been his fifth placing in the 2005 British Open. The 2008 PGA Championship player also finished sixth at the 2005 and 2007 PGA Championship. Odds are that Goeff Ogilvy can improve on these performances, especially since he seems to do better in these two events than in the Masters.
Geoff Ogilvy has also achieved several impressive off-tour victories in his career. In 1998/99 he won the Australasian PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Best Amateur performance; in 1998 he won the Tasmanian Open winner, the Mandurah Easter Open and the Queensland Medal.
When predicting a winner, it’s always useful to review the year that’s been, and in Ogilvy’s case, 2007 has been fruitful. He tied for sixth place at the Deutsche Bank Championship, tied for 4th at the Barclays Championship, tied for 9th at the Memorial Tournament and tied for 3rd at the World Golf Championship. Most importantly, he tied for 6th at the PGA Championship, which bodes well for his chances in the 2008 season.
