Monster takes another bite at 2008 PGA Championship
The monster took a big bite out of the 2008 PGA Championship field yesterday as half the field was eliminated, and only a single player managed to finish the day under par.
JB Holmes finished the day at the top of the leaderboard, with a tournament score of 139 after carding a 68 for the 2nd round. Despite taking the lead, Holmes joined a chorus of players condemning the severity of the new course at Oakland Hills Country Club.
"There are a lot of holes out here that are almost unplayable. They are a little ridiculous,'' Holmes told reporters at the conclusion of his round.
The fact that the cut was made at +8 was an indication of just how tough the pros found conditions on Friday, with the likes of Lee Westwood and Scott Verplank finishing their tournaments early on scores of +15.
Holmes will go into the fourth round trailed by Ben Curtis, Justin Rose and Charles Wi on even par, with Henrik Stenson and David Toms two shots back on +1.
Overnight leader Jeev Milkha Singh finished the day on 2 over, while pre-tournament favourite Phil Mickelson carded a round of 73 to finish the day on 3 over for the tournament.
