Yang stuns Woods in PGA Championship
The 2009 PGA Championship produced the biggest golfing upset of the year on Sunday, as world number one Tiger Woods was trumped by South Korea’s Yong-Eun Yang in the final round of the tournament.
Woods began the final round of the tournament with a 2 shot lead over Padraig Harrington and Yang, and secure in the knowledge that he had never lost a major when taking the lead into the final round.
Yang, however, stated before the round that he would not allow himself to be put off his game by the status and experience of Woods, and duly played the round of his life to win the tournament by a single stoke.
Padraig Harrington, meanwhile, imploded spectacularly as he went for the big shots and instead found the water. The Irishman eventually finished the tournament tied for 10th place, while Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood finished tied for third place.
“I visualized this quite a few times, playing the best player or one of the best players in the history of golf,” an emotional Yang said after the win.
“I had seen throughout Tiger’s career a lot of players had faltered. When my chance came, I thought I could always play a good round of golf and Tiger could always have a bad day. I guess that’s what happened.”
