Woods and Harrington duel at PGA Championship

The 2009 PGA Championship looks set to be a battle between defending champion, Pardraig Harrington, and world number one, Tiger Woods, after the two players finished the first day of the tournament in second and first place on the leaderboard.

Woods edged Harrington for the lead by 1 shot, playing a flawless round of 67 which featured not a single bogey. Harrington carded a round of 68 despite reporting feeling drained in the aftermath of his losing battle with Tiger Woods for the WGC-Bridgestone title.

“It’s always nice to get off to a quick start,” Woods said at the conclusion of the round. “You can play yourself out of a tournament, but you certainly cannot win the golf tournament (in the 1st round).”

“You don’t have to be eight shots ahead after the first round. That’s not it. You’ve got to keep plodding along, and major championships are set up so they’re difficult. They beat you into making mistakes.”

Several other top names finished within shouting distance of the leaders, with Robert Allenby carding a round of 69 to finish the day within two shots of Woods.
