PGA Championship Memorable Moments

1986

Greg Norman was one of the greatest golfers of his generation but missed a win again in 1986 when seemingly he could have had it in the bag. After securing the lead by four shots, he started slipping during the final round. Tied with Tway at the 18th, Tway faced the tougher shot in the bottom of a high-lipped bunker that stood on the short side of the pin. Norman would need to chip after missing the green, but he could see the flag cleanly. Norman couldn't maintain his lead and suddenly Tway was the winner by two strokes.

1991John Daly of the USA plays a shot during the USPGA Championship 1991 at Crooked Stick Golf Club, in Indianapolis.

1991 will go down as one of the major upsets in the history of the PGA Championship. Daly was in his first season on the PGA Tour and had shown some signs of promise on the tour. Having heard that certain big names had dropped out, Daly drove 7 hours to get onto the field and arrived at midnight.

Daly was something of a surprise when he shot a 69 in the opening round and was just two shots off the lead - seeing the course for the first time. Daly was gaining ground by hitting his drives long and straight and rarely missing a putt from six feet in.

The fourth round began with Daly making a bogey, and suddenly everyone began saying what a nice run it had been but now it was over. But Daly came right back with a birdie at the second and people began looking at him seriously. Another birdie at the fifth and it looked like no one could catch Daly. Even after a few hiccups, Daly's dream became a reality with his first (and only) PGA Championship win.

1999

The 1999 PGA Championship introduced the two front and centre – Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia. This playoff for the top spot saw the crowd holding their breath as Woods continued his exceptional play the third round, firing a 68 to tie Mike Weir for the lead. However, Garcia had a 68, too, and entering the final day stood tied for third, two behind Woods.

Garcia tried to catch up with Woods and after a double bogey five by Tiger at the 13th, the match was down to one shot. At the 14th and 15th play remained tense with Garcia and Woods neck and neck. It was Woods' bogey at the 16th that dropped his lead again to one shot till he managed to make par on the 17th and 18th to clinch his first US PGA Championship win.

2001

In 2001 David Toms took a gamble on the final hole and it paid off. After laying up on the longest par-4 in major history, Toms made a 12-foot par putt to once again deny Phil Mickelson his maiden major championship title. Toms shot a final-round 1-under-par 69 at the Atlanta Athletic Club to win the 83rd PGA Championship in Duluth, Ga., by one shot over Mickelson.

2002

2002 saw Rich Beem's name added to the list of unsuspecting winners of the PGA Championship. He shot a phenomenal 4-under 68 for a one-shot victory over Tiger Woods.
In just his fourth ever major championship start, he held off a late-charging Woods to become the 12th player in the last 15 years to make this event his maiden major title.

He finished at 10-under-par 278. The 73rd ranked player in the world beat 97 others inside the top 100.

2004

The 2004 PGA Championship saw Vijay Singh return to scoop the top prize after last winning the title in 1998. At the closing playoff hole, Singh held a one-shot lead and hit a 3-wood off the tee, then a utility wood 45 feet from the flag for his second. To capture the title, Singh needed to two-putt. He lagged his birdie putt a foot from the stick and effortlessly tapped in for the par and win.
