Zach Johnson – 2008 PGA Championship Player
Zach
Johnson is the man to watch in the PGA. Although this charismatic young
American only joined the PGA Tour in 2004, he recently clinched the 2007 US
Masters title, beating a host of top golfers along the way.
Zach Johnson was first noticed on the developmental Prairie Golf Tour and the NGA Hooters tour. Since joining the PGA he has racked up an impressive series of wins including his first win on the PGA Tour, the Bellsouth Classic in 2004. A string of good results on the PGA tour saw him selected for the 2006 Ryder Cup team where he was one of the few Americans players who performed well.
Since achieving his breakthrough in 2004 Zach Johnson has proven to be something of an inconsistent player whose second win at the Bellsouth Classic was contrasted by dismal performances at the US Open and British Open. This is further highlighted by 84th place finish at the Wachovia Championship, which followed on his second place in the Tour Championship.
However, despite wild swings in form he has also managed to pick up smaller titles on a fairly regular basis, and since turning pro has won the AT&T Classic, the Rheen Classic and Envirocare Utah Classic alongside his two Bellsouth Classic titles.
Zach Johnson’s biggest achievement to date is undoubtedly his win at the 2007 US Masters. The 2008 PGA Championship player entered the tournament as a relatively unfavoured player, but went on to defeat the likes of Tiger Woods, Retief Goosen and Rory Sabbatini on his way to the title.
The 2008 PGA Championship player’s accomplishment at the 2007 US Masters was all the more remarkable for the fact that he notched up the highest ever score in the tournament as he rocketed over 30 places up the rankings. Zach Johnson explained his impressive performance as the product of divine inspiration, claiming it was the product of his faith.
With 13 tournament titles to his name and a clutch of giant killings beneath his belt, it is anyone’s guess whether this erratic but talented PGA Championship player will walk off with first prize at the 2008 PGA Championships. His inclusion in the Ryder Cup proves that the leading minds in American Golf think that the young player has what it takes to achieve further success at the highest level.
