Angel Cabrera  - PGA Championship Player Profile

In so doing, he not only beat the world’s number one golfer, Tiger Woods, but became the first Argentine player to win the coveted trophy and the second to win a major since 1967. 

The Argentinean born golfer’s success at the US Open is testimony to his ability to persevere in the face of adversity. When launching his career as a pro the  PGA Championship player attempted to qualify at the European Tour Qualifying School three times before succeeding on his fourth attempt in 1995.

Angel Cabrera learned to play golf as a caddie in his home town of Cordoba, and has had a total of 18 professional wins since turning pro in 1989. His first European Tour win was the 2001 Argentine Open, which was sanctioned by the European Tour on a one off basis that year.

In 2002 Angel Cabrera won the Argentine Open for a second time before going on to add the 2002 Benson & Hedges International. In 2005 the PGA Championship player won the BMW Championship - the most prestigious event on the European tour outside of the majors and the World Golf Championship.

In 2006 Angel Cabrera played 19 European Tour tournaments and scored four top ten finishes. His best result was a fourth place in the WGC Adventure Match Play Championship. The same year, he entered 12  PGA Tour tournaments, and obtained three top ten finishes. His best finish was fourth place in the WGC Bridgestone Invitational.

In 2007 Angel Cabrera won the Barclays Singapore Open, beating Vijay Singh. Another important victory in 2007 came in the form of the  PGA Grand Slam of Golf. The man they affectionately call El Pato (“The Duck”) has come a long way since his humble beginnings, and all eyes will be on him in future seasons. The odds of him improving on his score of 19 in the PGA Championship look good, and the PGA Championship may see Angel Cabrera emerge as a genuine contender for the prestigious title for the first time.

In winning the US Open Angel Cabrera has proved himself capable of reaching the top five of the official world golf rankings.
