2009 US PGA Championship Preview

Trevor Immelman of South Africa hits a shot on the seventh hole during the second round of the 89th PGA Championship at the Southern Hills Country Club on August 10, 2007 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The 2009 PGA Championship makes a return to the Hazeltine National Golf Club on the 13th of August, as over 150 of the world’s top golfers convene to compete in the final major championship of the 2009 golf season.

Spotlight on Tiger Woods

Whether he succeeds or fails spectacularly, Tiger Woods is likely to steal the headlines at the 2009 PGA Championship.

After a one year absence from the tournament, and a sustained period of indifferent form that saw him miss the cut at the British Open, Woods is under pressure to take his first Major Championship title since coming back from injury.

The weeks leading up to the 2009 PGA Championship suggest that Woods has rediscovered his mojo.

The world number one claimed back-to-back titles at the Buick Open and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, coming from behind to win both tournaments as he showed the kind of form that has taken him to over a dozen major championship titles.

Woods will not, of course, have it all his own way at the 2009 PGA Championship, as 98 of the world’s top 101 golfers will be more than happy to toil outside the limelight as they look to secure the Wannamaker Trophy.

The Irishman who makes his own luck

Amongst the players most likely to pose a serious threat to Woods’s title aspiration is his opening round 3-ball partner, Padraig Harrington, who narrowly lost out to Woods in the final round of the WGC-Bridgestone Championship on the weekend prior to the PGA Championship.

The defending champion also looks to be returning to his best after a period of indifferent form, and watching Harrington and Woods playing side-by-side in the opening round of the 2009 PGA Championship should provide one of the tournament’s highlights.

Playing with Woods and Harrington in their 3-ball will be Richard Beem, a near forgotten golfer who claimed the PGA Championship when it was first played at the Hazeltine National Golf Club back in 2002.

Best of the rest?

Outside of the headliner 3-ball there are a couple dozen golfers who have the talent and form to win the 2009 PGA Championship title. Strong contenders include Lee Westwood, fresh off a 3rd place finish in the British Open, and Stewart Cink, winner of the season’s 3rd major.

Vijay Singh is known for peaking towards the end of the golf season, and he could be an interesting prospect alongside the likes of Phil Mickelson, Angel Cabrera and Sergio Garcia.

Many of these players are priced well above 30/1 in the 2009 PGA Championship betting markets, which suggests that each-way betting on one of these to finish in the top 5 at the tournament is the way to go for golf fans planning to bet on the tournament.
