2008 US PGA Championship
Dubliner, Padraig Harrington put together a commanding performance to claim the 90th edition of the elite US PGA Championship at Oakland Hills in Detroit.
The 36-year-old made merry with his scintillating form, claiming his second major in a matter of four weeks.
Harrington joins an elite club of only three men who have won successive victories at the British Open and the US PGA Championship Walter Hagen in 1924, Nick Price in 1994 and the greatest golfer of all time, Tiger Woods in 2000 and 2006.
The top European golfer clocked in a 66-66 on the week-end, crushing Sergio Garcia's hopes of a maiden grand slam win. Harrington began the final round in a tie for fourth place with Garcia, four off the pace of tournament leader, Ben Curtis of the USA, who was looking to emulate his surprise victory at the 2003 British Open.
It was Garcia who came out on the last day punching fast and furiously and it paid off big time when he carded a birdie-eagle for the first two holes. His putting, often considered his Achilles heel, seemed to be on track and it would have taken a very brave man not to back him all the way. By the 6th hole he was neck and neck with Curtis and produced a sparkling 31 on the opening nine.
Sadly Curtis' campaign at Oakland Hills took a radical dive on the back nine when he put together five bogeys in the last 11 holes, effectively putting paid to his hope of grand slam glory all over again.
This left the final two contenders, Garcia and Harrington to fight it out for the honours but with Harrington putting like an in-form Tiger Woods, it was only a matter of time before he claimed the crown and the third grand slam of his career.
